NLP Engineer

An NLP Engineer develops systems that process human language. Natural language processing includes classification, extraction, retrieval, ranking and conversational functionality using methods appropriate to the language and domain.

What does an NLP Engineer do?

The scope depends on the product and team. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Define annotations and prepare text while accounting for language and domain differences.
  • Develop classification, extraction or retrieval systems with suitable baselines.
  • Measure errors across document types, languages and important edge cases.
  • Deploy language features and monitor changes in incoming text.

Key NLP Engineer skills to assess

Python; text processing; statistics; machine learning; embeddings; annotation; evaluation. Transformer libraries and search systems may be useful, but simpler classifiers or rules can still be appropriate for some tasks.

Separate day-one requirements from skills a candidate can learn. Ask which decisions they owned and how they checked results. A technology listed on a CV does not establish hands-on depth.

A practical example of the role

Incoming customer messages need routing. The engineer designs labels, handles messages covering several issues and evaluates uncommon categories and languages separately so a strong overall score does not conceal poor service for a smaller group.

How this role differs from related positions

LLM engineering concentrates on large language models. NLP engineering includes a wider set of language tasks and methods. Specify whether the role centres on training, retrieval, data quality or product integration.

How to hire an NLP Engineer

Define the work before starting the search: your existing system, delivery stage, expected ownership and who will review technical decisions. Align the seniority, working format and communication requirements with those responsibilities.

Use a relevant technical discussion or work sample to explore these questions:

  1. How did annotation disagreements affect the model?
  2. How do you evaluate extraction when no relevant entity is present?
  3. When would you use a smaller classifier instead of an LLM?

Look for a clear explanation of the candidate’s own contribution, trade-offs and lessons from unsuccessful approaches. Match the assessment to the actual role rather than relying only on tool names or a generic quiz.

Frequently asked questions

Is NLP still useful with modern LLMs?

Yes. Language data quality and task evaluation remain essential. Specialised systems may also better fit latency, cost and deployment constraints.

What should an NLP Engineer job description include?

Include business context, core tasks, existing stack, expected seniority, reporting line and success criteria. Add the salary range, location or time-zone requirements and working format where available. Distinguish essential requirements from preferences.

Find the right NLP Engineer for your team

Web Recruiters helps companies search for technical specialists across Europe, Israel, the USA, Canada and Latin America. A dedicated manager coordinates the search and feedback. Initial screening can cover English, salary expectations, availability, working format and agreed client criteria. The client normally makes the final technical assessment; additional technical interviews can be discussed separately.
