Data Engineer

A Data Engineer builds the pipelines and data structures that make information usable for analytics, applications and machine learning. The role prioritises dependable data movement, understandable models and explicit data-quality ownership.

What does a Data Engineer do?

The scope depends on the product and team. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Ingest databases, events and external sources through suitable batch or streaming patterns.
  • Transform information into documented datasets with agreed business definitions.
  • Handle retries, duplicate events, late data and schema changes without silently corrupting results.
  • Add validation, lineage, monitoring and appropriate access controls.

Key Data Engineer skills to assess

SQL; Python or another processing language; data modelling; orchestration; warehouse concepts; testing; distributed-job debugging. Spark, Kafka, dbt and Airflow are examples; the required stack should follow the architecture.

Separate day-one requirements from skills a candidate can learn. Ask which decisions they owned and how they checked results. A technology listed on a CV does not establish hands-on depth.

A practical example of the role

Orders, payments and refunds must reconcile in a retail report. The engineer establishes stable identifiers and safe backfills so a corrected source record updates reporting without counting revenue twice.

How this role differs from related positions

Data Engineers make trustworthy data available. Data Analysts use it to answer business questions. Data Scientists may develop experiments and predictive models. Teams should agree the handover and ownership between these roles.

How to hire a Data Engineer

Define the work before starting the search: your existing system, delivery stage, expected ownership and who will review technical decisions. Align the seniority, working format and communication requirements with those responsibilities.

Use a relevant technical discussion or work sample to explore these questions:

  1. How do you make a pipeline safe to rerun?
  2. How do consumers learn about a changed source schema?
  3. How do you investigate disagreement between reporting and a transactional system?

Look for a clear explanation of the candidate’s own contribution, trade-offs and lessons from unsuccessful approaches. Match the assessment to the actual role rather than relying only on tool names or a generic quiz.

Frequently asked questions

Is Data Engineer another name for ETL developer?

There is overlap, but data engineering may also include platform design, streaming, contracts, quality and operational ownership beyond an individual ETL job.

What should a Data Engineer job description include?

Include business context, core tasks, existing stack, expected seniority, reporting line and success criteria. Add the salary range, location or time-zone requirements and working format where available. Distinguish essential requirements from preferences.
